Stainless Steel Buying Guide for Architects

What makes a stainless steel specification easy for a fabricator to quote accurately, and what slows it down.

Specify grade and finish explicitly in drawings

"Stainless steel railing" alone forces a fabricator to guess or ask — naming grade (304/316) and finish (mirror/hairline/PVD colour) directly in the drawing set speeds up accurate quoting significantly.

Request physical samples before final sign-off

Finish and colour read differently on-screen, in a rendering, and in person under actual site lighting — always request a physical sample before locking a client into a finish choice, especially for PVD colours.

Clarify who owns maintenance

For commercial/hospitality projects, confirming whether facilities staff or the client directly will maintain the material affects whether mirror or hairline finish is the more sensible spec — worth a line in your specification notes.

Build in a site-measurement step, not just drawing dimensions

Construction tolerances mean drawing dimensions and as-built dimensions rarely match exactly — specify that the fabricator measures on-site after relevant finishes are complete, not purely off drawings.

Working directly with a fabricator vs. a pure supplier

A fabricator who both sources material and installs (like us) can flag buildability issues in a design before they become site problems — worth bringing in earlier in the process than just at the tender stage.
