What it means practically
A GST-registered supplier can issue a proper tax invoice with their GSTIN on it, rather than a informal bill. For individual retail buyers this mostly matters for warranty/proof-of-purchase; for businesses and contractors, it's essential.
Why it matters more for contractors and businesses
- Input tax credit: businesses can claim GST paid on materials against their own GST liability — only possible with a proper GST invoice from a registered supplier.
- Project documentation: contractors billing clients need legitimate material invoices for their own accounting and client billing.
- Accountability: a registered business has a traceable tax identity, which is one more signal (not the only one) of a legitimate, established operation.
What to check
Ask for the GSTIN upfront and confirm it appears on your invoice — not just verbally mentioned. A supplier who hesitates to put their GSTIN on paper is worth a second look.
