Sheet vs. plate
There's no single universal cutoff, but generally thinner gauge stock used for cladding and decorative work is called sheet, while thicker, structurally rigid stock is called plate. The practical distinction that matters for you: plate is chosen when the material itself needs to bear load or resist bending, not just look good.
Typical plate applications
- Heavier structural fabrication where rigidity matters
- Counter and worksurface fabrication needing a solid, non-flexing surface
- Base plates and mounting components for railings and gates
Ordering plate
Because plate is heavier and often cut to specific structural requirements, we confirm thickness against the actual load or application rather than a generic recommendation — tell us what it's supporting and we'll spec accordingly.
