The security-first baseline
Bar spacing tight enough to prevent entry is the non-negotiable starting point — same safety-first logic as railing spacing, applied to window security.
Design directions beyond plain bars
- Simple vertical/horizontal grid patterns — clean, minimal, cost-effective
- Decorative laser-cut infill panels within a structural frame (see our jali guide)
- Curved or arched top details matching the window's architectural style
Finish for exterior exposure
Same logic as balcony grills — hairline/matte finish generally holds up better to weather than mirror for exterior window grills.
Fixed vs. openable grills
Some window grills incorporate a hinged, lockable section for cleaning access or fire-egress compliance — worth discussing if the window is a designated emergency exit route.
