A railing looks simple until you're the one specifying it — then there's baluster spacing, handrail height, finish, whether to use glass, and how it all gets fixed to the structure. This is the working checklist we go through with clients before fabricating a railing.
Start with the system, not the finish
Before picking a finish, decide the structural system:
- Baluster + handrail: vertical bars (round or square) supporting a top rail. The most common, most economical system.
- Glass railing: toughened glass panels held by SS/brass clamps or a channel, with or without a top handrail. Cleaner sightlines, more premium feel.
- Cable/rod infill: horizontal or vertical tensioned rods instead of solid balusters — minimal, modern look, less common locally but growing.
The system you choose affects cost, maintenance and how much of the view it blocks — decide this before finish or grade.
Height and spacing aren't optional details
For residential and most commercial staircases and balconies in India, a handrail height around 900–1000mm and baluster gaps that don't allow a small child to pass through (commonly kept under ~100–115mm) are the standard safety baseline architects design to. Confirm the exact requirement for your project type with your architect or local building norms — don't leave it to the fabricator to guess.
Indoor vs. outdoor changes the material decision
Outdoor railings need to handle direct rain, sun and temperature swings; indoor railings mainly need to look good and stay structurally sound. This is where grade selection (see our 304 vs 316 guide) and finish choice (mirror shows fingerprints and water spots more than hairline/brushed) both come into play. For outdoor balconies and terraces, we usually steer clients toward a hairline or matte finish over mirror, purely for lower maintenance.

Working with a fabricator vs. buying material separately
You can source pipe/bar stock and hire installation separately, but for most residential and commercial railing jobs it's simpler to work with a supplier who both trades the material and fabricates — it removes the finger-pointing if a fitting doesn't match the stock, and usually works out similar on price. That's how we operate: the bars and rods and fittings we trade are the same stock our own installation team uses.
