Keep it dry and off the ground
Standing water trapped against a stack of sheets or pipes is one of the fastest ways to cause surface staining, even on genuinely good-quality material — store on pallets or blocks, never directly on bare ground, and keep it under cover if possible.
Protect the finish, not just the metal
Mirror and brushed finishes (see our finish guide) are easily scratched by other materials sliding against them during site handling — keep protective film on until final installation, and don't stack sheets directly against each other without separators.
Avoid contact with carbon steel and tools
Storing stainless steel near ordinary mild steel, or using the same tools/equipment used on mild steel, risks embedding free iron particles into the stainless surface — this can cause surface rust spots that look alarming even though the base material itself hasn't actually corroded. Keep dedicated storage and handling separate where possible.
Minimize storage time where you can
The best storage is short storage — coordinating delivery timing close to actual installation (see our lead times guide) reduces the window where something can go wrong on-site.
