Material terms
- Grade — the alloy composition classification (e.g. 304, 316) that determines corrosion resistance; see our full guide.
- Gauge/thickness — how thick the sheet or plate material is.
- Finish — the surface treatment (mirror, hairline, PVD colour, etched).
- Coil — sheet material supplied as a continuous roll rather than pre-cut sheets.
- Mill test certificate (MTC) — a document certifying a batch's actual composition; see our dedicated guide.
Railing terms
- Baluster — a vertical bar/spindle between the handrail and base.
- Newel post — the larger structural post at the start, end or turn of a staircase.
- Infill — whatever fills the space between balusters or posts (more balusters, glass, cable).
- Spigot — a fitting that anchors a glass panel without a full frame.
Buying/business terms
- PVD coating — a thin, durable colour coating process for stainless steel.
- AggregateOffer / quote — pricing that varies by quantity/spec rather than a single fixed retail price, common for B2B material.
- Project supply — ongoing bulk material delivery against a construction schedule, as opposed to a single retail order.
