What it is
A mill test certificate (MTC) is a document from the steel manufacturer stating the actual chemical composition and mechanical properties of a specific production batch — proof of what grade the material genuinely is, not just what it's labelled as.
When it's worth requesting
- Bulk or contractor orders where specification compliance needs to be documented
- Commercial projects where the architect or client requires material traceability
- Any order where you specifically need 316 (or another grade) and want written confirmation, not just a verbal assurance
When it's not necessary
For small retail orders — a single gate or short railing run — an MTC is usually overkill; buying from a supplier with a track record and reputation is a reasonable substitute at that scale.
How to ask
Simply request it when placing a bulk order: "Can you provide a mill certificate for this batch?" A supplier who regularly deals with contractors and commercial projects should be able to provide this without friction.
