How Weather-Sealing Works at Railing Base Plates

If an outdoor railing is going to develop a problem, it usually starts here first.

Why base plates are the weak point

Water pooling around a base fixing, combined with the point where the anchor bolts penetrate the surface, creates exactly the conditions (trapped moisture, potential dissimilar-metal contact at fasteners) where corrosion problems tend to start first on an otherwise well-specified outdoor railing.

What proper sealing looks like

  • A sealant bead around the base plate perimeter to prevent water ingress underneath
  • Fasteners matched in material to avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals
  • Slight drainage slope or gap so water doesn't pool directly against the plate

Why this matters more in Jaipur's monsoon

Even with Jaipur's generally dry climate (see our climate guide), the monsoon period concentrates water exposure specifically at base fixings — proper sealing at installation matters more than grade upgrade for this specific failure point.

What to ask your fabricator

Simply ask how base plates will be sealed and fixed on your outdoor installation — a fabricator with real outdoor installation experience will have a specific, confident answer.
