When people compare pipe quotes, they usually look at outer diameter first. Wall thickness gets far less attention, even though it's often the more important number for anything structural.
What wall thickness actually controls
A thicker wall means more material resisting bending, dents and load — relevant for handrails people lean on, gate frames that take wind load, and any pipe that's structurally load-bearing rather than purely decorative.
Why two pipes of the same diameter can differ so much
A thin-walled pipe and a thick-walled pipe of identical outer diameter can look completely the same from the outside, cost noticeably differently, and perform very differently once installed. This is exactly the kind of spec that's easy to overlook until it matters.
How to specify it correctly
- Tell your fabricator the application (handrail vs. decorative trim vs. structural post) — thickness needed differs a lot between these.
- Ask explicitly what wall thickness is quoted, not just diameter.
- For anything load-bearing or safety-relevant, don't default to the cheapest thin-wall option without confirming it's adequate.
