What makes it "duplex"
Duplex stainless steel has a mixed microstructure (roughly half austenitic, half ferritic) that gives it notably higher strength than standard 304/316 grades, along with strong corrosion resistance — a genuinely different material family, not just another point on the same scale.
Where it's actually used
Duplex grades show up in heavy industrial, marine and structural applications where high strength-to-weight and severe corrosion resistance both matter — think chemical processing, offshore structures, and heavy load-bearing applications, rather than typical architectural railings and cladding.
Why it's not common in architectural work
For railings, gates, sheet cladding and most of what we fabricate, standard 304/316 already provides more than adequate strength and corrosion resistance at a lower cost — duplex is genuinely over-specified for most architectural use cases.
When it's worth asking about
If your project has unusual structural load requirements or severe industrial/marine exposure beyond typical architectural use, it's worth raising with your engineer whether duplex grade is warranted — for the large majority of our clients' projects, it isn't necessary.
