Stainless Steel Kitchen Counters: Grade & Finish Guide

A working surface has different priorities than a decorative one — here's what actually matters.

Stainless steel kitchen counter surface finish

Grade: 304 is the standard

304 grade is the widely accepted food-grade standard for kitchen surfaces, resistant to normal food acids and cleaning chemicals. Higher-volume commercial kitchens with heavier chemical exposure sometimes step up to 316, but 304 covers the large majority of residential and standard commercial needs.

Finish for a working surface

Brushed/hairline finish is the practical default for counters — it hides scratches and fingerprints far better than mirror, which matters enormously on a surface that gets used and cleaned daily.

Thickness and edge finishing

A counter surface needs enough gauge/thickness to resist flexing and denting under normal kitchen use — thinner decorative-grade sheet isn't appropriate here. Edges should be finished smooth (rolled or bullnose) both for safety and to avoid sharp raw edges.
